The voltage in an airsoft battery will determine the rate of fire of the airsoft AEG. A higher voltage will produce a higher cyclic rate (more rounds per second) and can help with airsoft guns that use stronger springs. The Voltage for an airsoft gun should never go over 12Vs as that is the maximum rated Voltage airsoft motors can take.
Amperage or mAh (milliamps) is the capacity of the battery. A higher mAh rating will allow an airsoft gun to fire more shots off of a single charge. A higher mAh rating can also help with Voltage to power and fully cycle an airsoft gun using a stronger spring as it produces more Wattage (the combination of Voltage and Amperage).
The C value of a battery only really comes into play with Lipo batteries. Lipo batteries have a high C value (usually 15+ while NiMH run about 5) that allows for an almost instantaneous discharge of power. A higher C value will give the airsoft gun a much higher rate of fire, and a much quicker trigger response. The downside of a high C value is that it can cause Arcing. Arcing, is when a bolt of electricity passes between the two contacts, without the contacts touching. This causes burning on the outside of the contacts and can even fuse them together. While Arcing doesn't always cause immediate damage, it can cause a greater need for maintenance for the airsoft gun.
There are several different configurations of airsoft batteries made to fit different airsoft guns. Arisoft batteries are made up of smaller rechargeable batteries called cells, and arranged and attached together to for different configurations. It is important to know which configuration will fit your airsoft gun so that the airsoft gun can be properly used. Some airsoft guns can take multiple types of airsoft batteries. The list below features some of the most common battery configurations:
Most alkaline batteries are non-rechargeable and disposable. They are the most common type used in household gadgets and are not seen too much in airsoft. Some alkaline batteries are rechargeable. They have a good capacity but limited rechargability. Rechargeable alkalines get fewer charge cycles in comparison to NiMH rechargeables.
The most common batteries used in AEGs, and are considered the safest. These batteries have great capacity and long lasting rechargability but are often more expensive than alkaline batteries. NiMH batteries come with different capacities ranging from 1050mah to 5000mah. It is always an advantage to get the higher capacity batteries. One downside is that NiMHs quickly self-discharge so they lose power when they are not being used. They will completely lose charge in about 3-6 months. It does not matter if the batteries are completely discharge since they have very little memory. Charging them too long can cause damage to the battery.
These batteries have good capacity and long life rechargability. NiCads must be fully discharged before they can be charged again. Do not charge a warm battery. Let them cool off before charging so that they can absorb the most amperage. There is a certain theory that NiCad batteries suffer from memory effect. If the battery is recharged before it is fully spent, it will remember that capacity at which is recharged, resulting in reduced capacity of the battery.

Non-rechargeable lithium ion batteries can be used in high drain devices such as digital cameras and cd players. The rechargeable kind are often used in cell phones.
These rechargeable batteries have a great capacity, high voltage and high C value and are less combustible but also very expensive. Overcharging a Li-poly battery can result in explosion and/or fire. These batteries can add a significant amount of power to an airsoft gun and will not harm an AEG as long as the right battery pack is used. Common battery packs used are 7.4V and 11.1V. 7.4V packs are usually found on stock AEGs and the 11.1Vs are used for more upgraded higher end AEGs. It is important to never fully discharge your Lipo battery or let it run below 3V or it may become ruined. It is also very important to only use the Lipo charging connector for charging or it will ruin the battery.
NiMH chargers come in two varieties, the basic wall charger and the smart charger. The wall charger simply dumps power into the airsoft battery and will continue doing so until unplugged. These chargers are cheap, but can cause over charging which may damage your airsoft battery. Smart chargers monitor the power of the battery and will charge the battery until it is full, greatly reducing the overcharging potential. It is highly recommended to use a smart charger at the lowest setting to help the life of the battery.

Lipo chargers plug into the special Lipo connector found on all Lipos and will monitor each individual cell. The Lipo charger is designed to balance each of the Lipo cells to prevent damage and fully charge the entire battery. A Lipo should never be charged using any other connector other than its Lipo charging connector. A Lipo will have a different shaped Lipo connector depending on the number of cells that it has, though all connectors look very similar.
